Powerful Connections: Using IoT to improve Public Safety

When it comes to public safety, every second matters. So, it’s no surprise that agencies are leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology and its data driven insights to streamline processes for crime prevention and emergency response.

What exactly is IoT?

In simple terms, Internet of Things (IoT) Technology is a system of interrelated, internet connected objects that can collect and transfer data over a wireless network without human intervention. These connected ‘smart’ devices send data that generate insights and trigger actions to improve processes. For example, a smart LPR can detect vehicles driving in the wrong direction and automatically alert agencies to dispatch officers.

Here are a few other ways IoT technology is being used to aid public safety officials:

  • Advanced BodyCams and Dash Cameras: No longer just devices to capture footage, the latest generation of body cameras and dashcams are infused with new IoT capabilities. These cameras are integrated with AI based software to provide real time intel, improved safety and video streaming.
IoT based 365 BodyCams come equipped with advanced technology like Facial recognition, Gun Shot detection, Voice recognition, and License plate recognition. Intelligent sensors can trigger the cameras to start recording automatically when an officer begins running or removes their gun from its holster.  Smart dash cameras help to prevent accidents on the road with features like forward collision warning, headway distance and lane departure warnings.
Realtime connectivity between the cameras and CAD and RealTime systems allow dispatchers and command center personnel to see live video footage of events as they unfold.
  • Smart AVLs: IoT based vehicle tracking provides the ability to reduce response time to the scene of an incident, improve coordination of police activities, and improve safety by monitoring the location of units. All of this is automated with help of AVL devices and AI based software, thus reducing the load on field officers and dispatchers. 365™ AVLs, for example, work seamlessly with 365™ CAD to automatically dispatch the closest available unit to an incident, provide optimized routes, and allow dispatchers to track unit location and ETA in real-time.
  • AI-Powered License Plate Readers: LPR technology has been widely adopted by agencies to not only recover stolen vehicles but also to reduce crime and traffic incidents. Smart LPR systems like LPR 365™ go beyond basic  license plate recognition with smart processing and built-in video analytics that provide information on vehicle make, model, color and speed. When a wanted vehicle is detected, the system automatically alerts agency personnel in real-time with the information needed to take action.
Similarly, neighborhood LPR systems, like Defender 365™ LPR, facilitate smart neighborhood security and connect the community with law enforcement. Defender LPR can auto-detect non-resident vehicles and automatically alert law enforcement when wanted vehicles are detected.

These are just a few of the countless ways IoT can be leveraged for public safety. As 5G becomes more widely available, the capabilities of IoT will continue to grow. To get the most benefit from IoT, agencies will need to ensure their systems, like CAD and RMS, can work together with smart devices to improve public safety outcomes.
